Overview of Trekking destinations in Nepal

This list was revised in August 2022 to reflect the most recent circumstances, the most significant of which is the reopening of the Langtang Trek, which was the impetus for the revision. The majority of these treks may be completed in two to three weeks. The local cultures of the Himalayas can be observed up close on each one of these treks, in addition to the breathtaking scenery. The summary that follows will assist you in selecting the trek that is most suitable for your needs. So here is the summery of top 10 treks in Nepal for your best trekking experience

#1. Everest Three Passes Trek

The Three Passes Trek takes you over three 5,000m+ passes and is the best way to see the Everest Region if you have 3 weeks to spend on the trail. Parts of the trek are the same as the Everest Base Camp Trek, but crossing the Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La passes gives you even better views of the giants in the heart of the Himalayas. There are different ways to do the Everest Base Camp Trek, and the Three Passes trek can be added to those.

How to get to the start of the trail: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, which takes 30 minutes.

Permits & Regulations

As with other Everest region hikes, a TIMS ($10 USD) permit, and a Sagarmatha National Park permit ($30 USD) are required. These will be arranged for you if you go through a trekking agency. If you are organizing your own trek, you must obtain your TIMS permission in Kathmandu and your Sagarmatha National Park permit in Monjo (a village checkpoint you will pass through on the first day of your walk).

Best Seasons to Visit Everest Three Passes Trek

This trek is best done in the spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November). The monsoon season (June to early September) has less reliable weather, but some trekkers prefer it since it fits better with their holiday plan. The winter season (December to February) is fairly cold, and snow may obstruct the passes, yet it frequently provides clear skies. top 10 treks in Nepal.

#2 Manaslu Circuit Trek

Since the construction of new lodges in 2010, the Manaslu Circuit Trek has become more accessible. The walk includes all of the fantastic elements you’d expect from a classic Himalayan climb—deep green valleys at lower levels, incredible views of 8,000m peaks, and a 5,000m+ pass crossing—while staying relatively unspoilt by tourists.

Despite its increasing popularity and new road development, the Manaslu Circuit remains inaccessible and has fewer trekkers than Nepal’s more established classic treks.

The trailhead is an 8-hour journey from Kathmandu.

Permits Required

The Manaslu trek is in a restricted area of Nepal, so you’ll need trekking permission to reach it. Solo trekkers are also not permitted, as a minimum group size of two is necessary.

#3 Langtang Trek

The Langtang trek has a lot of heart. After being barren of visitors for a few years following the 2015 earthquake, the trails and guesthouses have been repaired, and trekkers are returning.

The trek takes you through beautiful forests to the high alpine meadows and yak farms surrounding Kyangjin Gompa (a Buddhist monastery), with an optional day hike up to Kyangjin Ri (peak).

The trailhead is a 7-hour journey from Kathmandu.

Getting there and back

To begin your walk in the Langtang National Park, you must first drive to Syabrubesi, Dunche, or Sano Barkhu. Public buses from Kathmandu are available, however they are slow. A private car or jeep is a far superior alternative. Unless you trek across Gosainkunda and back through Helambu to Kathmandu, you will return along the same route.

Regulations and permits

A TIMS card (US$10) and a Langtang National Park pass (US$34) are required. These will be arranged for you if you are trekking with an agency. If you are organizing the trek on your own, you must obtain your TIMS permission in Kathmandu and your Langtang National Park permit in Dunche.

#4 Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek brings you to the foot of Annapurna South, deep within the Annapurna Massif. The vistas are less broad and more vertical than on most other classic treks, with you staring almost straight up to see the mountains towering above you.

To get to the trailhead, take a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, then a 2-hour drive; or take an 8-hour drive from Kathmandu.

#5 Upper Mustang Trek

The Upper Mustang Trek’s arid valley has a distinct landscape in comparison to practically all other treks in Nepal. This location is in the desert rain shadow of the Himalayas, with its numerous shades of brown and crumbling sandstone cliffs. Mustang was formerly its own country, and its Tibetan-influenced customs make this a culturally rich trek.

To get to the trailhead, take two connecting flights: Kathmandu to Pokhara (25 minutes) and Pokhara to Jomsom (25 minutes) (20 minutes).

Regulations and permits for Upper Mustang

All trekkers entering Upper Mustang (north of Kagbeni) must obtain a $500 per person permit that is valid for ten days. You can stay longer, but each additional day will cost $50. You will be needed to present your permit both on the way in and out of Kagbeni. In addition to the restricted permit, you must obtain an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for $20 USD per person.

#6 Gokyo Lakes Trek

The Gokyo Lakes Trek, like the Three Passes Trek, overlaps sections with the classic Everest Base Camp Trek but takes you into a valley west of Everest. The magnificent lakes in Gokyo, located at roughly 5,000 meters, are its main draw. Trekkers can then ascend Gokyo Ri (5,357m/17,575 ft), a rugged summit with one of the best vistas of Mt Everest.

The trailhead is accessible via a 30-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla.

Best season to visit Gokyo Lakes

The optimum seasons for this trek, like most in Nepal, are spring (March-May) and fall (September-November). The weather is likely to be clear during these months, with pleasant daytime temperatures. The Khumbu region, on the other hand, is notorious for being exceptionally chilly and dry, and many trekkers suffer the ‘Khumbu cough’ as a result of the dry dust.

Trekking is normally possible during the summer/monsoon and winter seasons, although more preparation for severe circumstances is required, and clear views are not guaranteed.

Regulations and permits

The Sagarmatha National Park (where you will be trekking through) is a UNESCO World Heritage site. As with all treks in the park, TIMS and Sagarmatha National Park permits are required.

Permit for TIMS: $10 USD per person
Permit to Sagarmatha National Park: $30 USD per person
These will be arranged for you if you organize your trek through a trekking service. If you are organizing the trek on your own, you must obtain your TIMS permission in Kathmandu and your Sagarmatha National Park permit in Monjo.

#7 Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is one of the most difficult treks in Nepal due to its high height, requiring three days of trekking on snow above 5,000m with no simple route down. However, if you have prior experience and are eager for the challenge, this journey is an incredible adventure that takes you into the heart of some of the world’s highest mountains.

#8 Nar Phu Valley Trek

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a true Himalayan wilderness adventure that is as breathtaking as it is unforgettable. The region first became accessible to the public in 2002. Tucked between the more popular Annapurna and Manaslu districts, Nar Phu is a true hidden gem that provides trekkers with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience pristine valleys brimming with raw Himalayan environment and ancient Buddhist culture.

The trailhead is a day’s journey from Kathmandu via Besisahar to Koto.

Day 11 Drive from Besisahar to Kathmandu Kathmandu
Day 12 Depart Kathmandu

Best Season for Nar Phu Trek

This hike is accessible during the monsoon season (June-August) as well as the two busiest tourist seasons (March-May and September-November). The journey is still enjoyable during the monsoon, though road access to and from Besisahar in the Himalayas may be hampered by mud and landslides. During the winter (December-February), the high pass may become impassable due to snow.

Permits for Nar Phu Trek

From September to November, the permit costs $90 USD per week per person. From December to August, it’s $75 USD.

#9 Everest Base Camp Trek

The Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the world’s most famous treks. It undoubtedly merits its reputation, given to its history, beautiful scenery, and the Sherpa culture you will encounter during the walk. However, because the journey is so popular, the main trails are often fairly crowded. This is why we rank other Everest region treks higher on our list (Three Passes Trek and Gokyo Lakes). Despite the crowds, Everest Base Camp remains a fantastic journey that deserves to be included among Nepal’s top treks.

The trailhead is accessible via a 30-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla.

Best Season for Everest Base Camp Visit

The Everest region is open all year, although the spring (March to May) and fall (late September to early November) are the best times to come for clear sky and temperate temperatures. The winter (late November to February) may be rather chilly, with temperatures below freezing, especially above Namche Bazaar, and the summer (late June to early September) brings clouds and potential aircraft delays out of Lukla.

Nonetheless, these offseasons provide an excellent opportunity to have a more distinctive Everest Base Camp expedition. Even during the monsoon, once above Namche Bazaar, the sky often clears. In the winter, there will be few people on the trail, and the villages and valley will be coated in a light dusting of snow. Teahouses will also be more readily available and hospitable, and you will have more time to engage with the locals (although many will have left for Kathmandu for the winter).

If you want to observe Everest expeditions in action and visit their base camps, this is the place to go. The greatest time to visit is in the spring. With dozens of expedition groups, the number of Base Camp camps explodes. You may not feel the peace of nature, but it’s fascinating to rub shoulders with aspiring Everest climbers.

#10 Annapurna Circuit Trek

The Annapurna Circuit trip is another iconic Himalayan journey that has lost some of its uniqueness due to crowds and, in this case, newly constructed roads. The roads have cut the “unspoiled” portion of this route down to around 12 days of hiking. Despite this, the walk remains a thrilling adventure, culminating in the passage of the 5,416m Thorong La mountain. Consider taking a side excursion to Tilicho Lake, one of the world’s highest lakes at over 16,000 feet.

To get to the trailhead, take a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, then a 2-hour drive; or take an 8-hour drive from Kathmandu.

Best Season for Annapurna Circuit Trek

The finest (and busiest) times to hike the Annapurna Circuit are often spring and fall, however, a reduced itinerary (focused on the circuit’s northern, drier part) is an excellent alternative during the monsoon. It is only during the winter that there are problems, as the Thorung La pass is frequently closed owing to snow.
